This LinkedIn Workforce Report is a monthly report on employment trends in the U.S. workforce. It’s divided into two sections: a National section that provides insights into hiring and migration trends across the country, and a City section that provides insights into localized employment trends in 20 of the largest U.S. metro areas: Atlanta, Austin, Boston, Chicago, Cleveland-Akron, Dallas-Ft. Worth, Denver, Detroit, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami-Ft. Lauderdale, Minneapolis-St. Paul, Nashville, New York City, Philadelphia, Phoenix, San Francisco Bay Area, Seattle, St. Louis, and Washington, D.C.

Key Insights

  • Hiring up from February, but growth is beginning to slow: Nationally, across all industries, hiring in the U.S. was 3% higher in March 2022 compared to the month prior. National hiring was 1.7% higher in March 2022 compared to March 2021. While the rate of hiring is beginning to slow, it’s still an incredibly strong job market for seekers.
  • Tech and Transportation Industries See Continued Growth: The industries with the most notable hiring shifts month-to-month in March 2022 were Wholesale (4.4% higher); Professional Services (3.7% higher); and Financial Services (3.2% higher). The industries with the strongest hiring rates relative to pre-COVID February 2020 levels were Technology, Information & Media (20.6% higher), Transportation, Logistics & Storage (16.4% higher) and Professional Services (10.8% higher).
  • Miami continues hiring surge, while SF still lags: Fifteen of the 20 metro areas we follow closely had hiring above pre-COVID levels, up from 14 last month. The metro areas experiencing the strongest hiring rates relative to pre-COVID levels were Miami-Ft. Lauderdale (19.8% higher), Houston (14.9% higher), and Austin (12.8% higher), while San Francisco (9.9% lower), Cleveland (3.5% lower), and Washington D.C. (3.2% lower) are still experiencing weaker hiring rates relative to pre-COVID levels.

Hiring

The LinkedIn hiring rate is a measure of hires divided by LinkedIn membership. Nationally, across all industries, hiring in the U.S. was 3% higher in March 2022 compared to last month February 2022. National hiring was 1.7% higher in March 2022 compared to last year March 2021.

The industries with the most notable hiring shifts month-to-month in March 2022 were Wholesale (4.4% higher); Professional Services (3.7% higher); and Financial Services (3.2% higher).

Migration

The U.S. cities losing the most people are College Station-Bryan, TX; State College-DuBois, PA; and Tuscaloosa, AL. For every 10,000 LinkedIn members in College Station-Bryan, TX, 214 left in the past 12 months.

The U.S. cities gaining the most people are Austin, TX; North Port-Sarasota, FL; and Nashville, TN. For every 10,000 LinkedIn members in Austin, TX, 132 arrived in the last 12 months.
